Shop with a cop
The Brecksville Police Department annually participates in the George Murray FOP Lodge #67 Shop with a Cop Program. Shop with a Cop is a program that involves police officers and civilian volunteers taking local children in need on a shopping spree followed by a pizza party. The Brecksville Police Department has participated in this program every year since it’s inception in 1996. The program is funded entirely through the Shop with a Cop raffle and donations. Each department within the lodge is responsible for selling tickets for the raffle or soliciting donations. The amount of money raised by each individual department determines how many children can participate with that department. All monies raised go directly and entirely to the children participating in the program.
The Brecksville Police Department is fortunate to have a good working relationship with the Brecksville-Broadview Heights City School District. The majority of raffle tickets sold in the City of Brecksville are sold through the schools. Individual schools sell raffle tickets and all monies raised by the school are used strictly for that school. Monies raised by the police department through ticket sales and donations are split evenly amongst all schools. The schools assist in selecting the shoppers. Selection is mostly based on financial or emotional need.
Officer John Chrisopulos is the coordinator of the Shop with a Cop Program for the Brecksville Police Department. Raffle tickets are generally available for purchase from the middle of October to the Beginning of December. Tickets are $1 each or 6 for $5. Donations are also accepted and greatly appreciated. All money raised goes directly to the children shopping. Currently for every $150 raised, a child receives a $150 gift card to shop with. Anyone interested in purchasing raffle tickets or making a donation can contact Officer Chrisopulos at (440) 526-8900 or email at Jchrisopulos@brecksville.oh.us.
In 2015, 13 officers from the Brecksville Police Department along with Mayor Hruby and City Prosecutor DiGeronimo participated in a fund raiser for Shop with a Cop called “Beards in Blue”. Participants each donated $100 to Shop with a Cop. Those officers then put their razors away for the month of November and were permitted to grow beards. This fund raising project alone raised enough money for 10 children to go shopping. In total, 45 children participated in Shop with a Cop in 2015. Over 40 volunteers also were involved and helped by taking a child shopping, catering the pizza party, or wrapping gifts.
